The beginnings: 1976

An extraordinary and life affirming story

”It started with a dream passed on from generations before…“

In this life-affirming story, bringing poetry, people and purpose together, Michael Morpurgo shares the many adventures that brought him and his wife Clare on a journey from literary London to the heart of Devon – arriving in a magical little village called Iddesleigh, where they started Farms for City Children in 1976…

The illustrations

An inspired artist and print maker

Robin Mckenzie has created 14 original wood engravings especially for this edition. His work is inspired by the landscape, and he spent time at Nethercott Farm sketching on location for the book. He then returned to his studio to create the most beautiful wood engravings of scenes from the farm which have been printed off the wood blocks in dark velvety black ink to stunning effect.
